Daily Prompt: Polite Company

“It’s never a good idea to discuss religion or politics with people you don’t really know.” Agree or disagree?

I agree this is NEVER a good idea, these are subjects that encourage heated debates.
Although saying that even with people you do know this is not always wise.
Just yesterday at work myself and a few colleagues ended up having a conversation about religion and gay marriage.
It’s safe to say I left the conversation quite quickly, as predicted the discussion became heated.
I’m not religious or gay but I do believe in equality.
These topics spark debate and if you’re among a group of strong individuals all with differing views this discussion could turn ugly.

I find it interesting how many people are responding to this prompt with “not a good idea.” What’s wrong with a little heated debate from time to time? Why are we so afraid of offending other people with our beliefs and our view of the world? If we aren’t willing to speak out about our beliefs on any topic than how strong can our convictions really be?

That being said, I chose not to use today’s prompt. 😛 And, if I had, I probably would have said it wasn’t a good idea too.

Thanks for the comment. Yes I agree a little heated debate can be great but when it turns nasty it can be stressful.

It’s called a discussion? Politics effects us all in our daily lives, and I bet you speak of something ‘political’ on a daily basis without realising. I don’t really understand to be honest. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and a healthy debate is good as its opens your mind to how others think. Your not trying to change someone’s opinion or anything.

I agree on that..this is definitely a subject that can go either way. But it’s when it causes conflict in the negative sense where it is best avoided. Thanks for the comment.

But that could happen at any point during any discussion no matter what the subject matter
